Master of Science in Education

Master of Science in Education-Secondary Education, Mathematics Area of Emphasis

Entrance Requirements

Student must hold certification to teach grades 9-12 and meet all graduate school requirements.  Students in education-related occupations or professions other than secondary school teaching which require licensing or certification by state or national boards may be recommended for admission.  The student must complete any required prerequisite courses.  Such courses do not count toward completion of the degree requirements.

Degree Requirements Total 33 hrs

1. General Core (18 hrs)

  • SFR 650 Philosophies of Education (3 hrs), SFR 690 Introduction to Educational Research (3 hrs)
  • Specialized Experience (6 hrs) - Includes research (see below) and other course work to total 6 hours.
  • Professional course work (6 hrs) designed for improvement of classroom instruction.  Courses should be selected from two of the four areas below*:  (a) PSY 605 (3hrs) Psychology of Adolescence or PSY 610 (3hrs) Psychology of Education, (b) SFR 609 (3hrs) Individualizing Instruction, (c) MID 710 (3 hrs)  The Middle School/The Junior High School, (d) SEC 601 (3 hrs)  Secondary School Curriculum  (*  Other electives specifically related to lassroom teaching may be identified and submitted for (a) to (d) above in conference with, and approval of, the degree advisor.)

2.  Emphasis Area - Mathematics (15 hrs)

     Prerequisite Mathematics Requirements: MTH 315 or equivalent, and MTH 302 or equivalent.

     Mathematics Requirements:

    Mathematics courses selected to provide good balance subject to the approval of the advisor. A minimum of 3 hours must
    be in Mathematics courses numbered 600 or above. Total: 15 hrs

3.  Research

    The student must complete 2-6 hours in one of the following two research options.

    Option I:  Completion of a thesis, an extensive seminar  paper, or a major creative work.  Thesis credit may not exceed
                    six hours of the total program.  Students writing a seminar paper may enroll in the appropriate seminar course
                    for their certification area (SEC 603, 604, 605, 606, 607, 608).

    Option II:  SFR 696 Problems in Education or a 600-level seminar course in the emphasis area specialty with the consent
                    of both advisors.  Additional course work is needed if less than six hours of research is chosen.  Courses will be
                    selected from the offerings of the Graduate College.

Comprehensive Examinations

A comprehensive examination must be passed by the candidate before a degree will be granted

Graduation Requirements

 In addition to requirements established by the Graduate College, students must have a GPA of 3.00 on all work attempted in education and in all work attempted in the emphasis area.


Master of Science in Education - Secondary Education, Natural Science and Mathematics Area of Emphasis

Entrance Requirements - See above.

Degree Requirements Total 33 hrs

General Core (18 hrs) - See above.

Emphasis Area - Natural Science (15 hrs):

Prerequisites and Requirements

A minimum of 15 hours with course work selected from two of the following disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Geography and/or Geology, Mathematics, and Physics. A minimum of 3 hours of course work numbered 600 or above must be included. The prerequisite requirements are those listed in the departmental statements of both selected academic areas of emphasis.

Course work from one of the above disciplines:         9 hrs

Course work from second one of above disciplines:   6 hrs
