Scholarships and Financial Aid
The mathematics department at Missouri State University offers many scholarships specifically for students pursuing a major, minor or graduate level degree in mathematics or one of its related programs. These scholarships are designed to support your studies at Missouri State and reward promise in the classroom and in future careers. Typically, applications must be submitted at the beginning of March with scholarship recipients announced later in the spring.

You may qualify for University scholarships. The Office of Financial Aid provides information about University scholarships, grants and loans. Most scholarships at Missouri State University, including those designated for mathematics students, require the submission of a completed Missouri State scholarship application. Details about additional materials are included in the descriptions below.
Financial need is often considered in the awarding of scholarships, and is determined solely by your Federal Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA).

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a declared Missouri State mathematics or mathematics education major who is eligible to take Calculus 1 or higher
Preference will be given to a student with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Thomas Shiflett Scholarship
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time mathematics major with the purpose of teaching mathematics.
- Have a minimum 3.0 GPA in mathematics

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal.
Jim Downing Mathematics Scholarship
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time mathematics or mathematics education major
- Have a minimum 2.5 GPA in mathematics.

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal.
Joe Crosswhite Mathematics Education Middle School Scholarship
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time junior or greater majoring in Middle School Education with a Mathematics emphasis.
- Have an overall and Missouri State GPA of 2.75 and a GPA of 3.0 in area of study.
- Have been admitted without condition to the Missouri State Teacher Education Program
- Have completed Foundations of Mathematics course and one of the following courses: Foundations of Geometry for Teacher or Foundations of Probability and Statistics for Teachers.
Preference will be given to financial need.

Mathematics Freshman Scholarship
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time incoming freshman with a declared major in mathematics or mathematics education
- Be eligible to take Calculus 1 or higher.

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal.
Louis O. and Minnie M. Smith Scholarship
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time student majoring in Mathematics with an expressed interest in a career in teaching Mathematics.
Awards will be made with regard for financial need.
Renewal criteria
This scholarship is renewed automatically. Student must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Renewal is at the discretion of the Mathematics Department Scholarship Committee.
Ed Huffman Mathematics Scholarship
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time sophomore or greater majoring in mathematics (including pre-engineering) or mathematics education.
- Have a departmental GPA of 2.5.
- Have completed the first calculus course required by the major.
Preference is given to students who do not receive other scholarships covering tuition.

Lawrence E. and Crystal Pummill Scholarship
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time student
- Be a sophomore or greater majoring in Mathematics.
- Have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and a departmental GPA of 3.5
To be eligible for the freshman scholarship, you must:
- Be an entering freshman
- Have received 1st place in either individual or team competitions in the Lawrence E. Pummill Math Relays.
- Demonstrate good high school academic performance and leadership qualities.
Renewal criteria
This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. The freshman award is not renewable.
Dr. Carl Fronabarger Memorial Scholarship

Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time student.
- Be seeking a Bachelor of Science in Education in Mathematics.
- Juniors or greater must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a departmental GPA of 3.5.
- Submit a Personal Statement attesting to your desire to pursue a career as a Math Educator.
Preference will be given to students with financial need, but it is not required.
Carol L. (Harless) Stephens Scholarship for Math Teachers
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time junior or greater majoring in Mathematics Education
- Have an overall and departmental GPA of at least 3.0
Preference will be given to students from Southwest Missouri.
Renewal criteria
This scholarship is renewed automatically. Student must maintain a 3.0 both cumulative and departmental GPA.
Mathematics Emeritus Professors Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time Mathematics or Mathematics Education major.
- Have a departmental GPA of 3.0 or greater if you are a sophomore or greater.
- Incoming freshmen considered based on high school academic performance and leadership.
E. Howard and Thelma F. Matthews Scholarship
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time sophomore or greater pursuing a B.S.Ed. in mathematics
- Have an overall GPA of 2.5
Awards are given with regard to financial need.

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal.
Hanover Scholarships for Mathematics
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be seeking either a graduate or undergraduate degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal.
Evelyn Maxwell Scholarship
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time freshman or transfer student majoring in mathematics education.
- Be in the top 33% of your class and submit a letter of recommendation from a high school mathematics teacher, for incoming freshmen.
- Have an overall GPA of 2.5, for transfer students.
Renewal criteria
This scholarship cannot be renewed.
Shirley Huffman Scholarship
Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship you must be an undergraduate student, properly enrolled as a full-time student at Missouri State University, that has completed 80+ credit hours, has a GPA of 3.0 or higher and is pursuing a degree in Mathematics.
It is the preference of the donor that:
a. the recipient be a first-generation higher education student.
b. have financial need.

Evelyn Ruark Leonard STEM Scholarship
Selection criteria
The Recipient of this award will be a sophomore, junior or senior enrolled in one of the following science based majors: Math. Engineering. Physics, Chemistry or Biology. The student must be active within a student professional organization related to STEM. The student must have started an internship or undergraduate research (unless an Engineering major). The student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Renewal criteria
This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. The scholarship can be continued through the student's graduate school course work should the student continue to meet the eligibility requirements outlined above.
Clyde and Judy Paul Mathematics Education Award
Value
A single award will be given every year. The award will always be valued at 3 credit hours rounded up to the nearest $100 ($700 - $800). Scholarship will be awarded in full during the semester of graduation.
Application
Complete the MSU Annual Scholarship Application by March 1.
Students may apply and may be considered through the online MSU Annual Scholarship Application, but, ultimate selection will be based on nominations and recommendations from members of the Mathematics Department Faculty.
Selection criteria
The Award will be given to a graduating senior pursuing a degree in a Mathematics program that will result in an initial Missouri certificate to teach mathematics at the high school level. The student must have completed all requirements for admission to and completion of the Teacher Education Program. Selection will be based on observed (by mathematics faculty) performance in the college classroom; field experiences as documented by mathematics faculty and other properly certified instructors; documented service activities; and personal characteristics favorable for teacher success that have demonstrated the recipient’s potential to become an outstanding teacher. The recipient(s) must be a senior graduating at the end of the spring and/or summer semester that has completed a minimum of 60 hours, including a minimum of 15 hours of mathematics courses while enrolled at the Missouri State University Springfield campus. The recipient(s) must have completed at least one of the following courses: MTH 409 or MTH 410.

This scholarship cannot be renewed.
Dr. John B. Prater Scholarship
Selection criteria
Awarded annually to full-time students majoring in Mathematics or Computer Science that have completed or enrolled in the first calculus course. For freshmen consideration should be given to high school academic performance and leadership. Sophomores or greater must have maintained a high enough GPA to allow progress toward a degree. Graduate students not eligible.
